Two Yorkshire Champions

It’s been a remarkable year for our golfers, and it keeps getting better.
Max Berrisford has been crowned this year’s Yorkshire Union of Golf Club’s Amateur Champion and Harry Richmond is the U18 Yorkshire champion.
Played over four rounds at Cleveland Golf Club, both players posted terrific scores.
Max finished at 12 under, two ahead of second place, with rounds of 70, 71, 69 and 66.
Harry finished at 4 over, six ahead of his nearest rival, with rounds of 74, 72, 76 and 70.
Huge congratulations to both of you.
The club is, once again, extremely proud of the achievements of our members.

Archie's a real pro

Congratulations to Archie Rowntree who has received an unconditional offer from The PGA , securing a place on its training programme, beginning on 1st October.
As a result, Archie’s status will officially transition from amateur to professional — a true reflection of his passion, commitment, and relentless hard work in the game of golf since he first picked up a club at six years old.
This is a significant personal milestone for Archie, as well as a proud moment for Glen Ient and his team and for the club.

An honour to host two of the UK's greatest amateur golfers

We were delighted to welcome Colin Dalgleish to Ilkley Golf Club last week. It was an honour to host two former Walker Cup players and Captains, and it was a privilege to hear our honorary life member, Rodney Foster and Colin swap memories and share great golfing stories with each other over lunch.
Colin’s visit was particularly well timed because this year sees the Walker Cup return to Alister Mackenzie’s legendary Cypress Point for only the second time in its 100-year history. It was at Cypress Point where Colin made his Walker Cup debut, under Rodney’s captaincy, in 1981.
As testament to the special bond between them, Colin spent 12 hours on the train (six hours each way) from his home in Helensburgh to visit his great friend.
Colin certainly had an impressive golfing career. He was:
- Scottish Schoolboys Champion for three consecutive years, a record to this day.
- Captain of both the Scottish and the Great Britain and Ireland boys’ teams.
- Scottish Amateur Champion 1981.
- Walker Cup Player 1981 (Cypress Point)
- Captained by Ilkley Honorary Life Member, Rodney Foster
- Combined team members subsequently winning two Majors
- GB&I players included Peter McEvoy, Ronan Rafferty, Philip Walton, Paul Way
- USA included Corey Pavin (1995 U.S. Open), Hal Sutton (1983 PGA Championship), Jodie Mudd, Jay Sigel
- Walker Cup Captain 2007 (Royal County Down), https://youtu.be/0eHMr899v9Y
- Combined team members subsequently winning 9 Majors to date:
- GB&I players included Rory McIlroy (2011 U.S. Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, the 2014 Open Championship, the 2025 Masters), Danny Willett (2016 Masters Champion)
- USA included Dustin Johnson (2016 U.S. Open and the 2020 Masters Champion), Webb Simpson (2012 U.S. Open), Rickie Fowler.
- Walker Cup Captain 2009 (Merion)
- Combined team members subsequently winning one Major to date:
- GB&I players included Tommy Fleetwood
- USA included Brian Harman (2023 Open Championship), Rickie Fowler
- Colin's amateur golf career took a back seat after university when, along with his younger brother Gordon he founded Perry Golf in 1984. Since then, the company has firmly established itself as one of the leading providers of luxury golf holidays to destinations around the world, primarily for an American clientele.

Among the best in Yorkshire golf

Well done to Henry Croft, Dan Thomas and Max Berrisford on their excellent scoring in the Yorkshire Union of Golf Club's First Division Team Championship.
Competing against the best teams in Yorkshire, the Ilkley team scored a combined total of 441 shots, over two tough rounds at Lindrick Golf Club, putting them in 5th place out of 21 teams.
The three-team format, where every shot counts, really is a pressure format and the club is extremely proud that Henry, Dan and Max have retained Ilkley’s place in the Yorkshire First Division.
Thanks also to caddies Neil Caddick, Neil Benstead and Mark Buckley for providing the necessary encouragement and support during the rounds.
Congratulations to Rotherham Golf Club, this year's Yorkshire First Division Team Champions, with an impressive score of 428.
The three of them are pictured with their caddies enjoying a pint after their rounds.

Raining champions

Congratulations to Ilkley’s team of Max Berrisford, Huey Cunningham, Ed Cowan and Henry Croft who battled through torrential rain at Rudding Park Golf Club to win the Harrogate & District Union of Golf Clubs 1st Division Team Championship on Sunday 20 July.
Despite the awful conditions, the Ilkley team posted fabulous scores with Huey shooting 71, Ed 72, Max 73 and Henry 77, giving them a combined score of 293, four shots ahead of Rudding A team in second place.
Although Max had to dash off, we managed to capture Huey, Ed and Henry celebrating with a well-deserved pint.

Hot weather and hot golf on Captain's Day

Huge thanks to Nick Ryle, for his generous hospitality on his Captain's Day yesterday. Thanks also to his son, George who worked tirelessly on the BBQ, serving up delicious fayre, while his daughter, Vanessa, was at the wheel of the beer buggy, ably assisted by Nick’s grandson Marcelo who acted as navigator.
Not only was the weather hot but the golf was too.
It was a closely fought contest with Ed Cowen, who was second to tee off at 7.10am, posting a score which led all the way to the end. Playing off a handicap of two, he scored a fantastic 43 points, with a gross score of 64.
In second place was Ben Ridgway with 42 points and third was Max Feather with 41 points.
Nearest the pin was Ed Cowan (he should keep playing early) at 2m 54cms, with the longest drive being achieved by Zac Ayre.
The junior prize, played over 11 holes, was won by Isla Slade with a fabulous 32 points.
At the end of the competition there was a terrific atmosphere on the terrace and in the clubhouse.
Commenting on the day the Captain said,
“I was powerfully reminded of what a wonderful club we have and how much fun and joy it has given me, and all of us, over the years.
“It was excellent that Ed Cowan, one of our best golfers, took home the prize. Yet another reminder of the talent we now have playing our unique and special course.
“Thanks again to our general manager Phil Jones, front of house manager Jaine Collington, head greenkeeper Duncan Campbell, and their teams for helping to create and deliver a day I will remember for a very long time.”

WELL DONE HUEY!

What a great experience for Huey at the final qualifier for The Open when he was grouped with two experienced professionals; Matthew Cheung from Hong Kong, who holds three tours cards with multiple wins, and Paul McBride from Ireland, a former Walker Cup player who competed against Scottie Scheffler and attended university with Will Zalatoris.
Huey more than held his own in front of sizeable crowds and if a few more putts had dropped he could well have qualified.
It certainly got him fired up as he won the Bradford Open finishing one under, over two rounds, at Keighley Golf Club, four ahead of second place.
Huey’s proving that he has the game, mindset, and dedication to earn a university golf scholarship in the United States, and we’re all behind him.

Taking it to the Max

It was an extremely close fought contest in the Scratch Medal, with some impressive scores. It was finely poised after the first round with Dan Thomas leading with a 66. However Max Berrisford clinched the win with a 20-foot putt on the 18th to beat Dan by one shot.
The top three (pictured) were;
- Max Berrisford 69+67 = 136
- Dan Thomas 66+71 = 137
- Henry Croft 68+72 = 140
After a close fought contest, the camaraderie and friendship in the club was clear to see as they enjoy a celebratory curry together.
